Caroline Mullet, a ninth grader at Issaquah High School near Seattle, went to her first homecoming dance last fall, a James Bond-themed bash with blackjack tables attended by hundreds of girls dressed up in party frocks. A few weeks later, she and other female students learned that a male classmate was circulating fake nude images of girls who had attended the dance, sexually explicit pictures that he had fabricated using an artificial intelligence app designed to automatically “strip” clothed photos of real girls and women. Ms. Mullet, 15, alerted her father, Mark, a Democratic Washington State senator. Although she was not among the girls in the pictures, she asked if something could be done to help her friends, who felt “extremely uncomfortable” that male classmates had seen simulated nude images of them. Soon, Senator Mullet and a colleague in the State House proposed legislation to prohibit the sharing of A.I.-generated sexuality explicit depictions of real minors.

Starting next month, you might need to pay $60 for access to Costco's famous $1.50 hot dog. That's because the wholesale retailer will soon be barring non-members from dining at a number of its food courts. Though shopping at Costco and enjoying the chain's deals and discounts has always required an annual membership, the food court has traditionally been open to the public. While not a typical outlet for the sale of precious metals, the members-only warehouse chain has seen its 1-ounce gold bars sell out faster than discounted 170-ounce jugs of laundry detergent. Unlike some other discount finds at the retail giant, gold bars come with hefty price tag. Political Cartoons View All 1199 ImagesCostco did not specify how many gold bars have been sold recently, or how often it restocks them. Chances are, interest around Costco's gold bars isn't going away anytime soon. Costco wants its tech employees to work from the office at least three days a week beginning in January, according to a memo viewed by Insider. Starting January 2, individual contributors and supervisors must work from the office a minimum of three days, managers must work in the office a minimum of four days, and directors and above must work on site full-time, Costco Chief Information Officer Terry Williams told employees in an email. Costco has a similar policy for other corporate employees, but allowed for flexibility for IT employees until now. Another tech challenge for the company is its continued reliance on archaic warehouse management software for inventory management, which several employees have told Insider is a frequent source of frustration. The company doesn't specify how many of those employees are corporate, nor how many work in IT.

For now, Costco is not raising the fee for members of its warehouse club, CFO Richard Galanti said Thursday. The company last increased its fee in 2017 from $55 to $60 for a basic one-year membership. The Issaquah, Washington, mega-retailer told investors Thursday that, for the time being, it would not raise the annual fee for its Gold Star membership from $60. Over 30 million households have Costco's $120 Executive Membership, and Galanti said Executive members represent nearly three-quarters of the company's total sales. He pointed to Costco's popular $4.99 rotisserie chicken as one way the company aims to reward members and drive sales.
Costco topped a ranking of customer satisfaction with general merchandise retailers. The annual survey polled nearly 36,000 customers and distilled responses into a 100-point scale. Neither Costco nor Walmart responded to requests seeking comment on the survey results. In the supermarket category, Costco lost out on the top spot to Trader Joes, while Walmart still trailed the pack. Do you shop at Costco or Walmart and want to share your thoughts on the survey?
Companies Costco Wholesale Corp FollowJan 17 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Tuesday said Costco Wholesale Corp (COST.O) must face a lawsuit claiming it falsely advertises and labels its canned tuna as "dolphin safe" despite using fishing methods that harm and kill dolphins. The Issaquah, Washington-based retailer said Wright only speculated about the risk to dolphins in tuna she bought, and that it made no promises about dolphin safety beyond using a "dolphin safe" logo on labels. He said this was particularly important because consumers "overwhelmingly" prefer tuna labeled dolphin-safe when given a choice. Richard Galanti, Costco Wholesale CFO Photo: Costco Wholesale Corp.“It takes time for changes to come through,” Mr. Galanti said. A company’s freight costs vary depending on whether they are fixed by contract for a period of time or based on spot-market rates that can change more quickly. The length of contracts as well as the company’s ability to renegotiate the terms of its agreements also affect the retailer’s freight costs, he said. These cost pressures will persist, as wages don’t tend to come down once they have gone up, Mr. Galanti said. Price increases have also hit food court items such as individual sodas and whole pizzas because of rising costs, Mr. Galanti said earlier this year.
Costco Wholesale Corp. posted higher sales in the most recent quarter, the latest indication that the warehouse retailer remains a haven for consumers dealing with persistent inflation. The Issaquah, Wash.-based company’s revenue rose 15% to $72.09 billion in the fourth quarter. The average estimate of analysts polled by FactSet was $72.04 billion.
The Asian American Power Network, a progressive advocacy group, has launched a $10 million effort to turn out Asian American voters in seven key battleground states ahead of the midterms. In the 2020 presidential election, the number of Asian Americans who voted in five battleground states was larger than the presidential margin of victory, according to the nonpartisan group Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote, or APIAVote. Just over 40% of Asian American voters who spoke a language other than English at home said they would use voting assistance if it was available in their own language, the survey showed. The survey showed that the three most important issues to Asian American voters were health care, the economy and crime. Ramakrishnan said the combination of redistricting and Roe v. Wade’s reversal is adding to campaigns’ uncertainty about voter behavior in November, so Asian American voters could play a key role.
